Medical Center
UCLA
Medical Center in Westwood is the cornerstone of the wide-ranging
facilities
known as UCLA Healthcare. At 1 million square feet, the new building
will be
the largest hospital building in the world. Yet, as designed by I.M.
Pei, one
of the greatest architects of our time, the building will be remarkably
humanizing, rich in natural light and designed to create the feeling of
a
number of small hospitals instead of a single overwhelming environment.
The desire
to “humanize” the environment is evident throughout. Patient rooms are
large,
private spaces, each with a “visitor’s nook” so that families can spend
time in
the room comfortably, without crowding the patient or being in the way
of
caregivers.
Technology
will play an equally important role. With a paperless medical record
system to
replace rooms full of documents, and a fiber optic system throughout
the
hospital to speed the flow of information, caregivers will have
whatever
information they need at their immediate disposal. Hand-held devices
will allow
our staff to access hospital information, while patients will order
meals,
watch videos and access the Internet through information and
entertainment
systems.
As one of
the of the world’s great hospitals moves into what will be one of the
world’s
most remarkable hospital buildings, there has never been a better time
to join
UCLA Healthcare.
